It is important to understand how Google ingests customer reviews and how they moderate the content of those reviews.
Google uses a tiered moderation system when unusual review patterns are detected. Each stage becomes progressively more restrictive. Here are the four that we have documented.
Stage 1: Additional Attention
Google detects unusual review activity and increases moderation efforts. A larger volume of reviews are removed by both automated systems and human moderators.
Common triggers: Sudden review spikes, suspicious review patterns, coordinated review campaigns to listings
Impact: Moderate - some legitimate reviews may be removed in the process
Stage 2: Post-Review Full Moderation
Specific locations or accounts are flagged for human led moderation. Reviews are published immediately but are aggressively removed afterward based on breaking any content policies.
Common triggers: Media attention of the listing(s), confirmed manipulation attempts, controversy
Impact: Significant - many reviews removed after publication and review
Stage 3: Pre-Publishing Moderation
Reviews are held in a queue and not published until manually approved. Most legitimate reviews eventually appear, but with substantial delays.
Common triggers: Repeated violations, confirmed suspicious activity, ongoing investigations into listings
Impact: Severe - reviews don't appear promptly, confusing customers
Stage 4: Review Ban
Google completely disables new review submissions. This is the most severe action and may be temporary or permanent.
Common triggers: Severe violations, large-scale fraud, legal concerns
Impact: Critical - complete loss of review functionality
Recovery
Moving back through stages requires time without violations, organic review activity, and policy compliance. In severe cases, direct appeals to Google support may be necessary.
In order to avoid these stages of Review Moderation, focus on delivering excellent service and let satisfied customers naturally share their experiences. Avoid shortcuts like fake reviews or paid incentives—they risk your reputation and violate platform policies.
