Only merge GBP Locations when consolidating or fixing duplicates - document first to avoid review data loss.
It is understandable if you are managing multiple location through a Google Business Profile, there may come a time where you would want to merge locations. Google does allow locations to be merged in the event that a location is being consolidated or if it is a duplicate in Google.
Google should not merge locations if the addresses do not match, however users have reported instances of it happening. Even worse, reviews have gone missing after the locations were merged. This loss of location-specific data can be devastating and is difficult for Google Support specialists to resolve without detailed documentation being provided of the data missing.
To prevent any nightmare scenarios like this, it is important to have backup files of your location data. To download review data from Google Business Profile (GBP), you can access your Google Business Profile Manager, select the desired profiles, click "Download Insights," choose a timeframe, and then click "Download Report"

Backing up these details will help you identify anything that is missing post-merging. After the merge is complete pay close attention to your new location for any drastic changes in location detail accuracy and review retention. It is not guaranteed, you will lose reviews, but it is important to be prepared and to have back ups of all relevant data.
