Google has updated their verification methods by introducing a mandatory "Business Description" step. It is viewed by many local listing professionals that this new method is less helpful and more about catching users in a workflow that contradicts your actual business model or fails to meet Google’s staffing requirements. This then users with headaches such as an automatic profile suspension or the dreaded permanent "Hidden Address" status. This article is aimed to help you make the correct choice for your listings when creating. Currently, Google has four disctinct options for you to choose for your business.
The New Google Business Profile Setup Options
Physical Locations
Choosing a physical location is the right choice for a traditional brick-and-mortar storefront, such as a restaurant or shoe store. But, please note that this option can cary extreme risk if your business falls in a grey area. To qualify, you must have permanent signage and a staff member present during all listed hours; if you are home-based and select this, your account will likely be suspended for "Quality Issues."
Hybrid Businesses
For businesses that have a physical shop but also travel to customers, like a plumber or photographers, the hybrid option is appropriate. However, this carries high risk as it often triggers a "verification loop" if your business license or utility bills do not perfectly match the storefront address.
Service Area Businesses (SABs)
If you travel to customers without a staffed physical location, like a home-based contractor, you should select the Service Area option. This is the safest choice for home businesses because it results in a hidden address, removing your private residence from the public map while allowing you to define a specific service radius.
Unstaffed Facilities
The unstaffed facility option is a lesser utiltized category intended only for automated kiosks or utility points like an ATM. Selecting this for a standard business, like a restaurant or shoe store, will lead to immediate suspension.
Online-Only Entities
Selecting online-only often acts as a "trap" for those unfamiliar with the platform, as it results in an immediate suspension. Because Google Business Profiles are strictly for businesses that interact with customers in person, online-only entities are considered ineligible.
Prevention and Verification Checklist
To ensure a smooth setup, you must verify your store's signage by only choosing the "Physical Location" option if you have a permanent, non-removable sign on the building exterior. You should also double-check your documentation to ensure your Business License matches the exact address and name entered in the setup flow. Finally, be mindful of the 30-Second Rule, which requires you to be prepared to record an unedited video showing your tools, branded vehicle, or yourself unlocking the workspace immediately after making your selection.
