Until recently, Google users were only able to report reviews for terms violations, but a new update has added the ability to also report review replies for the same reasons. Owner replies are no longer just public-facing reputation management; they are now subject to active policy enforcement by Google.
As a reminder, the following are reasons why reviews (and now review replies) can be flagged and potentially removed:
- Off-Topic: Addressing unrelated personal grievances or non-business matters.
- Profanity: Using explicit or defensive language.
- Bullying & Harassment: Calling out customers by name, attacking their character, or retaliating against negative feedback.
- Hate Speech & Discrimination: Unprofessional commentary regarding customer demographics or identity.
- Personal Information: Accidental or purposeful exposure of sensitive customer details (e.g., full names, order history, phone numbers, or account info).
With this new consideration, without a solidified and nuanced reputation management strategy, enterprise brands may be exposed to policy violations, public PR issues, and potential account flags, leading to bigger issues down the road. As Google tightens moderation around owner responses, centralized governance is no longer optional for multi-location brands.
Please note that at this time the Google API does not provide or enable reporting on this removed review reply status.
